The Battle at Longshore Causeway - An Extract

Chapter 1 - Morning Mist

In the early morning light, Peat Bog Moor lay shrouded under a white blanket of mist. Beneath this ghostly haze the first scurrying sounds of life could be heard through the ever-attractive ears of White Fox.

He nestled on the edge of the flatlands in a small mound of grass and felt well pleased with his lot. The fist warmth of the sun was filtering through his soft white fur, and the damp chill of the grass was evaporating into the promise of a beautiful day.

To his right lay the hilltops and Lookout Point; a gentle sweep of heights and lows from which could be seen the whole lay of he land beyond. At their base ran the River Rainer, which turned sharply, for no know reason, to cut a deep path beside the flatlands; skirting Peat Bog Moor, and eventually losing its power and momentum in the vast marshland.

Beyond the marshland lay the sea, its expanse a shimmering silk of glistening green, where dolphins ploughed a furrow and whales could be seen blowing and basking in the sun on the surface of the water of Dolphin Island.

Its sheer white cliffs rose resplendently toward a pure blue sky, flying birds of every type a peaceful sanctuary for rest on their long migratory routes or a permanent home to shelter in its many deep recesses. For mainland was Longshore Causeway, a dangerous point of passage for any unwary traveller, as the swirling waters around it would flow behind and then in front of them, cutting off both destination and retreat and leaving them fighting desperately to survive as they were taken up and swept sideways into a bubbling cauldron of salty water.

Although magnificent views to the island could be obtained across the flatlands from the heights of Lookout Point, it also allowed darker, more sinister views to the north across Lower Wood to the foreboding grey mountains, from whence no curious traveller had returned to tell the tale...
