Tommy and the Spirits of the Air - An Extract

Chapter 2 - In the Dark of the Night

It was in the middle of the afternoon that Jane, exhausted, finally managed to return home. How she had got through the morning she did not know, but her hopes of a happy return evaporated as the grim atmosphere in the house told her all she wanted to know.

Despite all the efforts of Tommy and his mother her little girl was a nervous wreck and remained firmly entrenched in the safety of her bedroom. Celina ushered Jane into the kitchen.

‘Jane, I’m going to have to go home but I haven’t sorted it out. She’s not afraid of Tommy and she’s not afraid of Bill, so all that leaves is the dog - and how he’s given her the evil eye in the middle of the night the Lord only knows! She’s obviously had a terrible nightmare and can’t divorce it from reality. Now I’ve got her to eat something, but, really, she’ll make herself ill, Jane,’ Celia said worriedly.

“It’s a worry,” agreed Jane, sighing. Shaking her head, and with Tommy in tow, Celia disappeared back across the road to her poor, neglected husband.

Now, Tommy knew more than almost anything else that Rebecca loved his dog, Patch, with a passion. He returned to Rebecca with his much-loved pooch and found it no surprise that as he walked his black-and-white companion into her room, her eyes came alive and her arms reached out to the one friend who would never let her down.

As Patch gently licked her face, all the strain and the distress of a long night seemed to melt away. Instead of staring into empty space she was now actually looking in to Tommy’s eyes and she was seeing them. She was like a little princess who has returned from a nightmare, woken with a kiss from her canine prince.

‘Hello Rebecca.’
‘Hello Tommy.’ Tommy was glad. At that very moment Rebecca was home – his friend had returned to him.
‘Did you have a terrible dream?’
‘No! I really did see him Tommy…’
